FLUIDOS (Flexible, scaLable secUre and decentralIseD Operating System) proposes a disruptive open source paradigm based on secure protocols for advertising, AI-driven resource orchestration and intent-based service integration. Based on established operating systems and orchestration solutions such as Kubernetes, it will provide enhancements for resource sharing through advertising/agreement procedures (in the horizontal dimension), and hierarchical node aggregation, inspired by inter-domain routing on the Internet (in the vertical dimension).
Intent-based orchestration will leverage advanced AI algorithms to optimise costs and energy usage in the continuum, promoting efficient use of resources at the edge.
The consortium brings together three industrial demonstrators focusing on energy, agriculture and logistics, which, together with associated playgrounds, will test the benefits of the proposed approach in concrete real-world scenarios. This project has the potential to pave the way towards European digital autonomy, where the sharing of digital resources – be it infrastructure, open source software, services, digital skills and expertise – is key.
FluiDOS aims to:
● Cost reduction: the trend is towards increasing capacity and costs for edge devices that are often not fully utilised. FluiDOS will easily and safely offload workloads to nearby devices, thus decreasing the need to deploy additional power.
● Reduced power consumption: Just as server consolidation introduced power savings in data centres, the unified orchestration offered by FluiDOS will reduce power consumption at the edge.
For battery-powered devices such as robots or drones, intelligent management of services between the device and the near edge can lead to longer battery life and also a greater efficiency in production.
● Greater agility in software development and deployment: With FluiDOS applications that can run anywhere, application developers will not need to consider the target infrastructure while building their software.
● New business avenues: FluiDOS will enable new business models where demand and supply of hardware (edge nodes, IoT gateways, etc.) and software (AI models, databases, etc.) can be easily catalysed and converted into profits, also for SMEs.
ROBOTNIK IN THE PROJECT
Robotnik, as leader of the robotic logistics use case, is responsible for implementing the results of the project on the chosen robotic platform.
Robotnik is the task leader for CI/CD (continuous Integration / Continuous Development), whose work will be aimed at implementing the automation tasks of software generation.
