SHIELDBOT

Next-generation robotics for sustainable and efficient thermal shielding of buildings

The ShieldBot project aims to transform the construction industry through the use of advanced robotics and sustainable practices, developing innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency and optimize building renovation processes.

As demand for sustainable, low-energy buildings continues to rise, traditional construction methods are no longer sufficient to meet modern standards. ShieldBot was created to address this need by developing a family of specialized robots: Façade-ShieldBot, Inner-ShieldBot, and Inspection-ShieldBot, each designed to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings while minimizing environmental impact.

  • Façade-ShieldBot is responsible for installing thermal cladding on building façades, improving insulation and reducing energy consumption.
  • Inner-ShieldBot is designed for indoor use, applying similar insulation to walls and ceilings to optimize comfort and efficiency.
  • Inspection-ShieldBot uses advanced sensors to assess exterior surfaces, detect deficiencies, and ensure proper, long-term maintenance.

The system is complemented by the Digi-Shield digital twin, which collects and analyzes real-time data from the robots’ operations. This information enables precise planning and agile decision-making during construction. Additionally, the use of Eco-Shield materials — sustainable, eco-friendly insulation solutions — contributes to reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional materials.

A key aspect of the project is human-robot collaboration, ensuring that technology supports workers rather than replaces them, enhancing both safety and efficiency on-site. Altogether, ShieldBot proposes a new model for construction and renovation that is more sustainable, efficient, and aligned with the needs of future urban environments.

ROBOTNIK AT THE PROJECT

Within this project, Robotnik plays a key role in the Inner-ShieldBot system, providing the mobile base on which the robotic arms responsible for installing insulation panels on interior walls and ceilings will be mounted.

The platform will be based on Robotnik’s RB-ROBOUT, a high-payload, highly versatile mobile robot specifically designed for indoor operations. Its robust structure and modular design make it ideal for handling the demanding and variable conditions typical of renovation sites.

To ensure safe and efficient operation, the Inner-ShieldBot will integrate Robotnik’s advanced navigation software, optimized for dynamic indoor environments such as construction or refurbishment sites. This software enables precise localization, obstacle avoidance, and adaptive path planning even in constantly changing surroundings. It also includes real-time inspection capabilities and comprehensive safety features that comply with the latest mobile robot safety standards.

By combining Robotnik’s proven mobile robotics technology with ShieldBot’s sustainability-driven mission, the Inner-ShieldBot becomes a key component in developing smarter, safer, and more environmentally friendly construction processes — paving the way for the future of green renovation.
